Perimenopause
At O’Skin Medical, Dr Emily Ware, offers patient centred, evidence-based management for people struggling with symptoms of perimenopause. Not everyone experiences a difficult transition into the menopause, but for many this can be a time when mood, sleep, energy, weight, libido, skin, vulvovaginal and joint changes can be functionally impairing. Emily holds an advanced diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, is an active member of the Australian Menopause Society and is well known for her holistic care of women struggling through this change.

How it Works

Initial Consultation
Your initial 40–60 minute consultation with Dr. Emily Ware will focus on assessing the severity of your symptoms, as well as reviewing your medical, surgical, and gynecological history to evaluate any associated risks. Dr. Ware takes a goal-directed approach to care, dedicating time to understand your priorities and crafting a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs.
During the consultation, she will provide detailed education about the perimenopause journey, available treatment options, and the reasoning behind them. If you have vulvovaginal concerns, Dr. Ware may perform an examination, cervical screening, swabs, and wet mount microscopy, as needed and as time allows.
Treatment Options
Lifestyle Changes
Modifying your diet, incorporating exercise (especially strength-based routines), and managing stress can significantly impact your symptoms and improve overall well-being. Quitting smoking can also contribute to better health outcomes. Psychological therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness, may also provide relief and help manage emotional challenges during this time.
Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT)
Also known as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), MHT is the most effective way to alleviate menopausal symptoms. It offers additional health benefits, including improved bone density, reduced risk of fractures, and potentially lowering the risk of diabetes and heart disease in some women. However, MHT may not be suitable for everyone, particularly for women with a history of hormone-dependent cancer.
Types of MHT include transdermal options such as patches or gels, or oral tablets.
The appropriate type of MHT and its associated risks depend on factors like age, history of hysterectomy, and other health conditions.
Non-Hormonal Treatment Options
Prescription non-hormonal medications are available for symptom management and may be an effective alternative for women who cannot use MHT for medical reasons, choose not to use it, or find that lifestyle changes alone are insufficient.
Complementary Therapies
Complementary medicine (CM) includes a range of treatments and products outside conventional medicine, such as herbal remedies and alternative therapies. Many women consider CM to manage menopausal symptoms when they wish to avoid or cannot use prescribed medications.
If you’re thinking about using CM, consult your doctor to ensure it won’t interfere with other medications you’re taking. While some therapies are marketed as natural and safe, there is often limited evidence to support their effectiveness. Additionally, products purchased online may lack regulation, raising concerns about safety and contamination. Dr. Emily can guide you in understanding the potential benefits and risks of complementary therapies.
